Clean drinking water for the People of Magodes in Uganda

Clean drinking water for the People of Magodes in Uganda

Project details

Magodes, Tororo District, Uganda

Country

Uganda

Goal

Clean drinking water for the people of Magodes in the Tororo District

Implementation

Donation of 2 AQQAcube for filtering polluted water

People helped

260 school children and a community of 1000 people fetch water from contaminated spring water and wells

The project

Situation on site

Insufficient water supply is the main cause of most diseases locally. The main sources are a well, the river, which turns completely brown during the rainy season, an open spring as well as spring water piped underground to the school.  The water from the open spring looks clean, but our tests showed that it is contaminated with bacteria, because cattle is using the same water, amongst other problems. However, the inhabitants like that water better and say the well water tastes salty due to the quality of the soil. The river is only suitable as a source of water in dry seasons. This community has thankfully no water sources that dry out. This means that there is enough water, however the water quality is insufficient, as the WeWater team verified through water samples.

Project implementation

The plan is to help the school with up to 260 children and the church community with up to 1,000 people in the region with initially one to three AQQAcubes. Thus, treat the locally available few water sources. Due to its size and complexity, the project will be divided into several project phases. In the process, the site was visited on site by the WeWater team in July 2022 and data on the situation and water quality was collected.

Sustainability

The sustainability of our work on this project is ensured by the following three points:

  1. Training (filter handling and hygiene)
  2. Filter protection
  3. Long-term project monitoring

The people are trained on site in the use of the filters. They are familiarised with the technology and should learn about/observe the weaknesses of the system (e.g. filter cannot filter pesticides, no oil in filter).

Furthermore, the people are familiarized with the topic of water hygiene in order to be able to use the filters as effectively as possible and to prevent re-contamination.

The filters are placed in a protected location and at times of the day when there is no monitoring of the filters, it can be securely locked to prevent the filters from being lost or damaged.

The monitoring of the project will be done with the help of Vincent Obure. He lives in the community. This is to ensure the highest and longest lasting use of the filters on site. Among other things, this is achieved by disinfecting the filters every six months.
