Clean drinking water for the people of Okenye and Roko A, Kenya

Clean drinking water for the people of Okenye and Roko A, Kenya

Project details

Okenye and Roko A, Kenya

Country

Kenya

Goal

To provide clean drinking water for the communities of Okenye and Roko A in Siaya County

Implementation

Donation of 3 AQQAcubes for filtering polluted water

People helped

1716 people draw their water from polluted water holes and ponds

The project

The two villages Okenye and Roko A are located in the Siaya region near Lake Victoria. A total of 1716 people live here, divided into 138 households.

Both villages get their drinking water from water holes and ponds. The water is turbid and bad smelling. Laboratory tests showed a strong contamination with bacteria. At this project location, access to water varies throughout the year. It gets even more problematic in the dry season. Which is why the community dug a well. However this well also provides water that is not potable. It is cloudy and contaminated with bacteria.

Project implementation

Due to the size of the three Kenya projects and the planning uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, implementation is taking place in two phases.

For the people in Okenye and Roko A, we have estimated a total of 3 AQQAcubes, one in phase 1 and two in phase 2. To minimize transport costs, we are shipping the filters in bulk together with the AQQAcubes destined for the other two communities.

Sustainability

The sustainability of our work on this project is ensured by three points:

  1. Training (handling the filters and hygiene)
  2. Filter protection
  3. Long-term project monitoring

The people are trained on site in the use of the filters and are getting familiarized with the technology. Furthermore, people are trained on the subject of water hygiene. This should prevent further contamination of the water sources. We have found volunteers in the villages who will take responsibility for monitoring and securing the filters. At the same time they are the contact persons for the WeWater team in Kenya in case of problems. They continue to monitor the effectiveness of the filters and are available as contact persons for questions within the village.

Not only because of the Covid-19 pandemic, functioning hygiene measures are extremely important. But the current situation has prompted WeWater to produce a digital video manual on the use, cleaning and maintenance of the filter solutions. With this, potential problems can be solved quickly and efficiently without the necessary local presence of the Berlin staff.
